Born out of the recession in the early '80s and in response to the Toxteth riots, Groundwork's original purpose was to give communities the impetus to rebuild their local environment. The company coordinated with partners from private, public and voluntary sectors to improve the local environment and it soon became obvious that the approach worked really well. By 1983 Groundwork had gone national and there are now 40 trusts in the UK, employing around 2000 people and collectively managing around £120 million of project and contract income each year. Locally, they have been operating in East Lancashire for more than 20 years and Groundwork Pennine Lancashire is now the largest environmental charity in Lancashire, turning over some £4 million a year and employing close to 100 professional staff. Today our work embraces much more than those early restoration duties and encompasses a multitude of projects that help to build sustainable communities in areas of need.
