The Valley of Stone is a project that includes an exciting heritage walks programme, which intends to promote greater awareness and understanding of Rossendale’s rich quarrying heritage.

A chance to enjoy the scenery of the newly landscaped hillside and moorland at Landgate and Whitworth moor. Guide Arthur Baldwin (3 miles)

Sunday, 13th April 2008 - Fecit End and Plunge
Up the splendid Valley with old mill remains and on to the hill top quarry Fecit End with good archaeology and views. Guide Arthur Baldwin (5 miles)

Sunday, 20th April 2008 - Gorpley Clough in Spring
Following old routeways to Todmorden with tremendous views over Calderdale. An early springtime return up Gorpley Clough. Guide David Humphries (9 miles)

Sunday, 4th May 2008 - Cloughfold Scrubbing Mill
Probably the most important site in Rossendale's quarry heritage, the hub of an extensive moorland tramway system. Guide Marrian Tattersall (Some steep ascent) (3.5 miles)

A special look at the district's best grouping of Nonconformist chapels, at Crawshawbooth & Goodshaw - full of character. Guide Jean Blackledge (5 miles)

Sunday, 18th May 2008 - Grane and 'Ossy' Moor
Excellent moorland scenery on our north west boundary, from Grane over Oswaldtwistle Moor to 'Gobbin Land' What? Guide Alan Rogerson (8 miles)

Sunday, 1st June 2008 - Old Mills and Stone Mines
Visiting the distinctive old mill chimneys in the Jack Lodge area and a valley side return past the Scout stone mines. Guide Arthur Baldwin (4 miles)

Tremendous views over Greater Manchester from the Pennine Bridleway at Rushy Hill, return by the Spodden river side. Guide Arthur Baldwin (4 miles)
